Lucas Tauch breaks 36-year-old Class 4A Region II meet record in the 1600 meter
Melissa qualifies 5 athletes to state meet
Commerce - The Melissa Cardinal track teams fared well at the Class 4A Region II track meet and are sending a strong group of qualifiers to Austin on May 6-7-8. The men’s team finished third at the regional meet with 48 points. Kilgore was the meet winner with 54 points and Midlothian Heritage was runner-up with 48. The Cardinals finished ahead of district rivals Celina and Van Alstyne who each had 36 points.
Senior Lucas Tauch was the highlight of the day when he set a Class 4A Region II meet record in the 1600 meter run with a blazing time of 4:20.61. He broke the previous record by Doug Adkins of White Oak of 4:21.02, which had stood for 36 years. Tauch also won the 3200 meter run with a time of 9:41.69. He will be representing Melissa in two events.
Carlos Branch also set a personal record with his second place time of 21.59 in the 200 meters while qualifying for the state meet. Ryan Johnson also qualified for the trip to Austin with a second place finish in the high jump with a leap of 6-02.00.
The Lady Cardinals also finished third with 47 points behind the strong showing of Region II champion Kennedale 116 points and district rival Celina 55 points. Melissa had two state qualifiers in two events each from the regional meet.
Kaylee Lewis captured the gold medal in both the 100 meters (11.72) and 200 meters (24.57). Abigail Bass pulled off the meet double in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. Bass finished second in the 1600 with a time of 5:16.54 and won the gold in the 3200 with a winning time of 10:53.92.

Anna Coyotes Regional Track Results:
Commerce - The Anna Coyotes track team competed at the UIL Class 4A Region II meet and even though they didn’t qualify any competitors for the UIL State Meet; they competed at the highest level. Kenny Bibb was the lone point getter for Anna with a third place finish in the 800 meter run. The men’s team finished tied for 24th with six points.
