Lady Cardinals roll through first two rounds of basketball playoffs

Melissa - The Melissa Lady Cardinals (21-7) are headed to the UIL Class 4A Region II Regional Quarterfinals after taking down Dallas Lincoln 67-47 in their Area matchup. Seniors Wendy Clemmons and Katie Sparks led the Lady Cardinals with 17 and 15 points, respectively. 

Clemmons, who led the Lady Cardinals in scoring per game (14.7 ppg) also added a team leading 12 rebounds and 4 assists in the contest. Other Melissa players including Katie Sparks nine rebounds, Jayden Bullard seven rebounds and Mia Ellis six rebounds pitched in on the boards for the Lady Cardinals. 

Juniors Amerson Hoyt and Grace Moothart each added eight points on the night. Mia Ellis seven points and Jaydyn Bullard six points rounded out the scoring for the Lady Cardinals. 

Melissa had little problem with their Bi-District opponent Oak Cliff Faith Family Academy as they rolled to a 59-18 win in that contest which was the first round of the UIL Class 4A girls basketball playoffs. Seniors Jaydan Ballard 13 points and Wendy Clemmons 12 points led the Lady Cardinals scoring. Ballard also added 13 rebounds. 

Junior Amerson Hoyt tossed in 11 points in the Bi-District contest hitting three of six on her three point attempts. Mia Ellis also contributed scoring nine points. 

The Lady Cardinals are geared up for their annual playoff run and are led by a core group of 11 girls including Seniors Wendy Clemmons, Jaydan Bullard, Mia Ellis, Katie Sparks and Ryanne Smith. Junior team members include Gracie Mouthart, Amerson Hoyt and Hannah Plate. Sophomore Kaitlyn Reeves, along with Freshmen Kate Difloria and Ebunoluwa Akapo round out the core group. 

Melissa will now face the winner of Carrollton Ranchview (5-8) and Midlothian (20-5; 12th ranked TABC) in the Regional Quarterfinal game after their Area matchup. Time and date to be determined. Regional Quarterfinals are slated for February 24-25.
