District play continues in Anna

Anna - The Anna Coyote boys basketball team is sitting at 6-3 in the District 9-4A race. The Coyotes split their two games this past week. They traveled to Sanger to get a 64-22 win and lost to Van Alstyne 67-55 on Friday, January 22. 

The District 9-4A race finds Melissa (8-1/12-6) in the top spot with Van Alstyne (7-1/12-8) holding down second place. The remainder of the district includes: Anna (6-3/15-6), Celina (5-3/14-9), Aubrey (2-5/7-9), Gainesville (1-7/5-13) and Sanger 0-9/3-15). 

This week’s District 9-4A schedule for the boys includes January 26: Melissa at Van Alstyne, Anna at Aubrey and Celina at Sanger; January 29: Van Alstyne at Celina and Sanger at Gainesville. 

UIL district certification is due February 16 when the top four teams will make the playoffs. At present Melissa, Van Alstyne, Anna, Celina and Aubrey are still mathematically in the mix. Bi-District playoffs begin the first week of the playoffs on February 18-20. 

Anna girls basketball recap - 

The Anna Lady Coyotes are currently sitting at 0-9 in district and 4-17 on the season according to MaxPreps. They lost to Celina on January 12, 46-15 and Sanger 81-37. They also dropped a game to Van Alstyne 52-23 on January 22. 

Sanger (9-1/16-5) is at the top of the standings in the District 9-4A race with Melissa (8-2/17-5) in the second spot. The remainder of the district standings are as follows: Van Alstyne (7-3/13-7), Aubrey 6-4/8-8), Celina (4-6/9-13), Anna (0-9/4-17) and Gainesville (0-9/0-17). 

This week’s District 9-4A matchups for the girls include January 26: Aubrey at Anna, Sanger at Celina, Van Alstyne at Melissa; January 29: Celina at Van Alstyne, Gainesville at Sanger and Melissa at Aubrey. 

Currently, the key games left are those involving Aubrey and Celina who are fighting for the final number four spot in the playoffs. They don’t play each other and will have to rely on the outcomes of games involving other teams. 

This is the final week for District 9-4A games unless there are tie-breakers needed to determine the final top four teams that advance to the playoffs.  Final district certification by the UIL is due on February 9 and the first round of playoffs (Bi-District) begins on Feb. 11-13.
