Lady Cardinals off to a great season at 10-3; Cardinal hoops starts district Dec. 18
Melissa - The 2020-2021 girls basketball season is off to a quick start for the TABC Class 4A 16th ranked Melissa Lady Cardinals (1-0/10-3). The Lady Cardinals opened District 9-4A play with a 79-14 win over Anna.
Melissa’s only three losses have come at the hands of TABC Class 4A 8th ranked Sunnyvale (10-1) 51-39, TABC Class 5A 7th ranked Princeton (11-0) 47-31 and another Class 5A opponent McKinney North (7-3) 61-47.
Lady Cardinal November wins came against Garland 81-29, Fort Worth Wyatt 41-40, Frisco Heritage 41-30, Frisco Lebanon Trail 68-29, Nocona 65-42 and Community 68-37.
December wins for Melissa to this point include Lucas Lovejoy 57-20, Sherman 57-33, Denison 52-46 and their district opener over Anna 79-14.
In the first night of District 9-4A games Aubrey (1-0/3-4) defeated Celina (0-1/5-8) 47-34 and Van Alstyne (1-0/7-4) knocked off Gainesville (0-1/0-6) 63-7. Friday night, December 18 district games are Celina at Melissa and Sanger at Aubrey. District 9-4A includes Melissa, Van Alstyne, Aubrey, Celina, Gainesville, Anna and Sanger.
The holiday break schedule for the Lady Cardinals includes games at Gainesville on December 22, home game against Sanger on December 29 to complete the month of December. The Lady Cardinals travel to Van Alstyne on January 1, home game against Aubrey on January 5, home game against Anna on January 8.
The Melissa Cardinal boys basketball team is sitting at 3-4 going into the first week of District 9-4A play on Friday, December 18 at Celina (8-4). Friday night district contests include Aubrey (5-3) at Sanger (2-6) and Anna (7-3) at Gainesville (4-4).
Head coach Eric Benton’s Cardinal squad to three quick wins to open the season. Melissa got a season opening win at home against Paris 63-55 followed by a road win at Lake Dallas 69-49.
After picking up another win at Ferris 58-49 the Cardinals closed out the month of November with their first loss of the season to Decatur 70-59.
Melissa hasn’t had much luck in December dropping three straight games going into their district opener at Celina (8-4). The Cardinals lost to Kennedale 67-62, Sherman 62-55 and Bishop Lynch 57-49.
District 9-4A opponents for the Cardinals include Anna (7-3), Celina (8-4), Aubrey (5-3), Gainesville (4-4), Van Alstyne (3-7) and Sanger (2-6).
The holiday schedule for Melissa includes four games beginning with a home game against Gainesville on December 22, away game at Sanger on December 29, home against Van Alstyne on New Year’s Day (January 1) and at Aubrey on January 5.
