Coyotes roll at Quarterfinals to gain Regional Tourney bid for the 3rd straight year

Anna - The Anna Coyotes found themselves down 3-4 after the doubles competition against Alvarado in the UIL Area Team Tennis playoff round. Before the teams moved to the singles matches Coach Vince Sharp gathered his kids together to rally his troops.

During that team meeting several of the team members including Luke Adcox (senior) and Payton Wickliffe (junior) figured out how to overcome the challenge facing them against the strong Alvarado squad. Anna needed to win seven singles matches to clinch the win and move on to Regional Quarterfinals. At the end of the day, the Coyotes won 11 of 12 singles matches and overcame the deficit.

“I don’t remember seeing that in my nine years of coaching. The kids fight hard for me.” Sharp commented. “After the match, the Alvarado coach paid our team and myself a great compliment when she acknowledged that it is obvious that the team loves being part of our program and it shows the way they fight for me,” which makes me very proud of them, he added.

“Junior, Payton Wickliffe especially showed a lot of fight and true grit that it takes to be a leader and top player on a team like ours. She fought off match points in her singles match and came back to win 11-9 in a tiebreaker,” Sharp noted. The 14-5 victory in the Area round sent the Coyotes to the Regional Quarters to face their next opponent Ferris at North Forney High School on Tuesday, November 2.

The Coyotes stepped back up to their normal level of dominance in their match against Ferris as they took a 5-2 lead after the doubles matches and then put their opponent away winning their first five singles matches to take a 10-2 win. “Luke Adcox hit an ace on match point to clinch the overall win in Boys Singles line 4. His win sends us to the Regional Tournament for the third straight season,” a very excited head coach Sharp commented. For Anna, this is a great accomplishment for a program that started from scratch just six years ago.

The final results in the Alvarado match were as follows. Girls doubles winners included; Line 1 Morgan Sharp/Molli Woodbury won 6-1, 6-2, Line 2 Maura Ballard/Peyton Wickliffe won 6-0, 6-2 and Line 3 Kate Adcox/Julia Katke won 6-2, 6-2.

After getting up 5-2 after doubles the Coyotes only needed five singles wins to secure their third straight trip to the Regional Tourney.

The Coyotes (TTCA 13th ranked) are looking at facing the winner of the Kaufman/Lindale quarterfinal match being played on Tuesday, November 3. If Kaufman (TTCA 6th ranked) wins the match the teams will play in Rockwall according to head coach Vince Sharp, time and date TBA. It is yet to be determined if Lindale (TTCA 11th ranked) wins where the teams would play and what time it would take place.

Six years of hard work by everyone that has been involved in the Anna tennis program has led to the accomplishment of its initial goal of getting to the Regional Tourney (third straight year) and are at the precipice of taking this opportunity and qualifying for the State Team Tennis Tourney at Texas A&M (College Station) beginning Tuesday, November 17. According to Coach Sharp every single team member and their many supporters are focused on that goal.
