Suspected drunken driver initiates New Year car chase
The new year got off to a more eventful start than local police would have liked. In the early morning hours of Jan. 1, a possible drunk driver attempted to pass another vehicle on US 75 between Sherman and Howe. The suspect hit the vehicle in the rear and the side but did not stop.
Van Alstyne Police were dispatched to the area after the victim called 911. When they arrived near the intersection of US 75 and Van Alstyne Parkway, they spotted the suspect and attempted to pull him over. He ignored them and continued south on the freeway.
A chase ensued, with speeds approaching 100 miles as the pursuit continued through Anna. In Melissa, the suspect hit another vehicle but continued despite suffering a tire blowout.
The suspect eventually exited Laud Howell Parkway in McKinney and stopped his vehicle on a bridge. He then got out of the vehicle and ran behind it before jumping over a guardrail
According to a Van Alstyne police spokesperson, the man fell approximately 25 to 30 feet to the ground below. When police apprehended him, they found a stolen firearm along with another firearm.
The man suffered multiple injuries including broken bones. He was transported to a local hospital.
As of Jan. 4, the incident remained under investigation. The suspect’s name will not be released until charges are formally filed. Police strongly suspect that he was intoxicated at the time of the incident.
