Storms wash out Sparks & Spangles
Poor weather forced Melissa officials to cancel the inaugural Sparks & Spangles Independence Day celebration scheduled for July 2. The decision was made due to the prospect of more rain as well as dangers associated with possible lightning.
The city’s fireworks vendor said that the event could have proceeded in light rainy conditions. However, heavy downpours that occurred early in the day coupled with electrical charges within lightning bolts meant putting on the show would be impossible.
Melissa officials say they are planning to host a make-up fireworks show sometime later this year. Details on that event are still being finalized.
