Name: Catherine Chavez
School: Anna High School
College plans: I am going to Texas A&M-Galveston to study Marine Biology.
Superstitions, rituals or traditions before or after competing: Before the game we always listened to music in the locker room, then right before the game we prayed. If we won, we had a chant that we would yell in the middle of the field.
Song or music that prepares you for competition: "Right Above It" by Lil Wayne.
Favorite subject/class: English and math
Favorite teacher and why: Coach Wilkerson from my sophomore year. He was the one to kind of put me on the right path.
Favorite coach and why: Coach Mad (of course). He was always there to lift me up when needed and he was always a good person to vent to.
Best teammate and why: I’m gonna say my goalie, Payton Wickliffe. She always hyped up the team and helped us feel better when we were down.
Best high school sports memory: Our first tournament this year, we won all games, going undefeated.
Best high school non-sports memory: Getting multiple acceptance letters to colleges.
What you love about your sport: I just love playing and being out on the field. It always made me feel good about myself. I just loved everything about it.
Favorite sports movie and why: "Rudy." It’s just a really good movie about how a team comes together to help out a teammate.
Describe the Anna Class of 2020: We are all honestly pretty close and we barely have any problems that I’ve seen.
Biggest lesson learned: Always put everything into what you love and what you do. It will pay off.
Biggest influence in your life: Coach Madrigal.
Athlete you look up to: Alex Morgan. Her story is just really amazing. She worked hard and got exactly what she wanted.
Reaction to the season being canceled: Honestly, it was really heartbreaking. I wanted to finish my season and finish playing in the play offs. My last game I played, I played my hardest, but we still ended up losing. So hearing that that was my last game honestly sucked. I was so excited to play in the playoffs, but the playoffs weren’t going to come. My high school soccer career came to an end sooner than I would’ve liked. Even thinking about it now is making me sad. I’m not playing in college because of body problems and pain. So that was really my last game to ever play on a team.
Message to your teammates: Keep working hard, ladies. You never know when the game will be ripped from you and you never know what could happen during a season. Work for what you want and never give up.
Message to your freshman self: Don’t settle for anything less than your best. Don’t listen to what other people have to say. Do what you do best and put everything into it.
Thing you won’t miss at all: The drama that would sometimes happen on the team.
Thing you will miss the most: Just the sport in general. I’ve played since I was 3, so giving it up now hurts big time.
