AUBREY - Anna’s Lady Coyotes gave it all they had Friday but, ultimately, Aubrey’s late 20-7 surge

proved too much to beat back. After leading the Lady Chaparrals, 18-17, at halftime and, 29-22, at the

end of three quarters, Anna was nipped, 42-36, in this key district contest at Aubrey High School.

The win keeps the 8-1 Lady Chaps alone atop District 11-4A, with Melissa next at 7-2 and Anna tied for

fourth at 4-5. With one district game left, the Lady Coyotes can still reach the postseason with a win

over 3-6 Celina on Feb. 11.

Forward Qua Fisher led Anna with 13 points and also hit the team’s only two 3s of the game. For the

Lady Chaps, guard Kathimae Dow rolled to 17 points - with 10 coming in the crucial fourth stanza. She

also drained a game-high three treys.

The scrappy Lady Coyotes were playing without injured starting guard Kaycee Redwine and also had to

deal with late foul trouble.

“Our girls battled really, really hard tonight,” Anna head coach Justin Baldia said. “I’m incredibly proud

of the effort and the heart they showed. Sometimes the ball goes in for the other team more than it

does for you. We did a great job defensively. We were physical and we rebounded the ball really well.”

“We controlled the game, from an offensive standpoint till that fourth quarter. The pressure got to us a

little bit. It’s tough anytime you’re down a senior guard [Redwine]. You’ve got to make adjustments.”

Redwine was out due to concussion protocol rules after taking a hard blow to the head versus Melissa

on Feb. 4.

The Lady Coyotes are responsible for Aubrey’s only district loss this season - 36-32 at Anna on Jan. 21 -

and they almost did it again. What’s the secret? “I have no idea, to be honest,” Baldia said. “For

whatever reason, it’s a favorable match-up for us. We’ve played really well against them both times.”

This most recent contest was anybody’s game with just over a minute to go. That’s when the referees’

whistles curiously went silent on two big plays that happened to favor Aubrey. The first occurred with

Anna down, 36-34, and Lady Coyotes guard Marianna Bert bringing the ball across midcourt. Bert was,

shall we say, accosted by two defenders and stripped of the ball for a coast-to-coast layup and a 4-point

Aubrey lead.

Then, after two Bert free throws had pulled Anna back to within two, 38-36, she drove the lane with 20

seconds left – and was seal-slapped perhaps three times before the ball sailed out of bounds. Lady

Chaps ball. Then Fisher was ticky-tack-whistled and, with 12 seconds to go, Aubrey led, 40-36. Another

steal ended the game. (Just sayin’.)

In the first quarter, a Fisher 3 – off the rim and backboard – and Bert’s layup off a Shataelyn King steal

helped stake Anna to a 9-4 lead. But, working inside, the Lady Chaps tied it, 9-9, by the end of the

stanza. Aubrey eked ahead, 11-9, in the second frame but Fisher drove the lane to knot things again.

After another logjam at 13-all, the Lady Chaps bombed a trey for the lead. Five-straight Bert free throws

gave Anna its 18-17 edge at the break.

The Lady Coyotes looked their most dominant in the early third quarter, popping for a 7-0 run as Fisher

hit a 3 from the cheap seats then came back with two free throws. Down, 25-17, Aubrey coach Ron

Gathright called timeout - but out of the break, Lady Chaps shooters were still cold. After a double-

dribble call on Aubrey, the Lady Coyotes started to slow things up and looked in control.

Dow’s 3 from the left side, though, showed the Lady Chaps light in the tunnel, trailing 25-20, with under

two minutes left in the third. Traylor answered with a layup off a Bert feed before King canned two free

throws. After an Aubrey bucket, Anna took a 29-22 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Lady Chaps’ two big treys in the early fourth put pressure on the visitors, as their lead dwindled to

31-28. Lexi Stewart’s free throw with 2:59 left in regulation would give Anna its final lead of the contest,

34-33.

Foul trouble forced Stewart and Bre Traylor to the bench late in the third quarter. Both had been a force

near the basket throughout the game. They returned for the stretch run, but King picked up two quick

calls and fouled-out with 1:30 to go. With 56 seconds left, Traylor picked up her fifth foul and was done.
