Whitesboro rallied to top Anna’s Lady Coyotes, 8-6 on Feb. 18 in the softball season-opener for both teams at the Anna Sports Complex. Trailing, 6-5, to open the sixth inning, the Class 3A Lady Bearcats struck for three runs then hung on to win. Whitesboro’s big blow in the sixth was a 1-out, 2-RBI triple by BreAnn Best to take a 7-6 lead. A 2-out single to center provided the Lady Bearcats’ eventual winning margin.

Whitesboro pitcher Karley Wolf went the distance, striking out 13, walking seven and allowing six hits and six earned runs.

Lady Coyotes starter Amber Thille worked six innings, allowing seven hits, five earned runs and three walks, while striking out seven. Hannah Price came on in the seventh and gave up one hit, a walk and struck out one. Anna was slowed by seven errors.

For Anna, Shelby Dombrowski went 3-for4 at the plate with a double for 3 RBIs and Hannah Morland swatted a triple, going 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs.

The Lady Coyotes struck first with two runs in the first inning courtesy of Dombrowski’s 2-out single to left, scoring Thille and Morland.

Whitesboro chipped back to lead, 5-2, by the middle of the fifth but Anna regained the advantage with four runs in its half of the frame. A 2-out single to right by Kallie Harris started the Lady Coyotes’ fifth-inning push back and, after Thille drew a walk, Morland’s triple to left knotted the score at 5-5. Dombrowski then doubled a 1-2 pitch into left to give Anna the lead.
