Staff report

Melissa’s Lady Cardinals rolled to a 10-0 win over Class 3A Pottsboro in the season-opener Feb. 17 at The Z-Plex in Melissa.

Pitcher Bryton Wright went the distance for the Lady Cards in the run rule-shortened contest, striking out 14 and allowing one hit and a walk in five innings.

Melissa’s Rachel Wells, Savanah Rodriguez, Kindred Johnson and Autumn Bell all went 2-for-3 at the plate, with Rodriguez collecting a team-high 4 RBIs. The Lady Cards posted 11 hits altogether, working against two Pottsboro pitchers.

After a scoreless first inning, Rodriguez got Melissa on the board with a 2-run homer in the bottom of the second. In the third, Bell led off with a single to right field and, two batters later, Johnson brought Bell home from second with a line drive to the left side. Wright then doubled to left and Rodriguez followed with a two-base hit to center for a 5-0 Lady Cards lead. Then, with two outs, Wells’ double scored Rodriguez for a 6-0 Melissa advantage.

Wright struck out the side in order in Pottsboro’s fourth and the Lady Cards added more runs in their half of the frame. Bell’s 1-out single to center set the table for Trinity Needham who ripped a triple to left for a 7-0 lead. Next up, Johnson smacked another triple to left, scoring Needham.

Leading, 8-0, to open the fifth, Wright again struck out the side in order. Melissa’s Maggie Rodgers walked to start the bottom of the fifth and Wells’ ensuing single to center had two Lady Cards on and no one out. Kayla Stevenson’s sacrifice bunt then scored Rodgers for a 9-0 lead and Wells moved to third. The game-ending run came on Wells’ steal of home plate with Christie Stevenson at bat. _______________________________________________________________________________
