In District 11-4A basketball action last week, the Melissa Cardinals (8-1) notched wins over Aubrey and Gainesville, solidifying their hold on second place - one game back of Celina.


Melissa was set to host the first-place Bobcats (9-0) on Feb. 18, with a co-district championship on the line.


In the Cards’ 56-48 win over Aubrey Feb. 11 at Melissa Middle School, guard Ezra Monroe blew up for 26 points in another dominant performance.


Monroe, guard Hudson Czarnecki and guard Phoenix Bramhall each canned three 3s. Melissa trailed, 23-22, at halftime before bouncing back to take a 36-29 lead after three frames. The Chaps made a run in the fourth, but that’s when Monroe canned 14 of his points.


On Feb. 14 at Gainesville (1-8), Melissa dispatched the Leopards, 66-54, with guard CJ Shellie pumping in a game-high 18 points for the Cards.


Forward Tavenor Watts was next with 16 points as Monroe and Bramhall added 13 and 12, respectively. Leading by one, 44-43, after three quarters, the Cards ruled the fourth, 22-11, fueled by seven points each from Monroe and Czarnecki.
