At the District 9-5A wrestling tournament Feb. 5-6 at Princeton High School, Melissa’s Hayden Nofziger claimed the district championship in the meet’s top weight class – 220 pounds.
Nofziger defeated Austin Blair of Lucas Lovejoy for the title.
All told, Melissa qualified six wrestlers for the Class 5A Region III meet, slated today and Saturday at Pflugerville.
On the boys’ side besides Nofziger, Jaydon Kiefer and Bryson Zufelt earned fourth- and fifth-place finishes, respectively, to qualify.
For the Lady Cards, regional-qualifiers Lilly Rogers and Ashly Vasquez were both district runners-up in their respective weight classes, while Sammy Brown qualified for regionals with a fourth-place finish.
Cards Peyton Knight, Brett Schraeder and Daylynn Borges all took sixth-place finishes.
Melissa wrestling is coached by Rick Gagarin and Cole Kiefer, with Gagarin leading the girls’ team and Kiefer, the boys.
“This year every wrestler, boys or girls, that wrestled at the district tournament either placed or qualified for the regional tournament,” Gagarin said. “I feel like that was a successful tournament for us.”
Fourteen teams competed at the district meet.
