In non-district basketball action last week, Melissa’s Lady Cardinals (6-3) picked up wins over Class 3A foes Gunter and Pottsboro. “We still haven’t come close to playing a complete game but we are improving,” Melissa head coach Chris Oestreich said.


On Nov. 25 at home versus Gunter, the Lady Cards triumphed, 61-53, led by guard Grace Moothart and forward Ashley Gideon with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Melissa guard Wendy Clemmons posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 assists and also recorded five steals. Moothart and guard Mya Ellis collected three 3-pointers each for the Lady Cards. Gunter forward Sarah Putnicki poured in 29 points.


Melissa trailed, 32-31, at halftime then broke open the still-tight contest in the fourth quarter.


At Pottsboro on Nov. 26, the Lady Cards prevailed, 48-35, with Clemmons collecting a team-high 16 points, including a game-high four 3s. Melissa led, 25-17, at the half then pulled away in the third to lead, 35-19, after three quarters.


Pottsboro’s Hadley Williams logged a game-high 26 points.
