MCKINNEY — The Anna Coyotes returned to the Class 4A Region II team tennis tournament after topping district-mate Melissa, 10-7, on Oct. 22 at McKinney North High School. The victory makes these Coyotes the first Anna team sport in school history to reach a regional semifinal two years in a row.
However, Anna’s team tennis season ended last Thursday with a 10-4 loss to Wills Point in the Class 4A Region II semifinals at Grapevine High School. Ryan Lamar and Brendan Muisyo claimed a doubles victory for the Coyotes while teammates Luke Adcox and Payton Wickliffe won the Mixed Doubles match, and Andrea Alvarez and Molli Woodbury won singles matches.
“The kids played hard,” Anna head coach Vince Sharp said. “Wills Point is one of the top programs in the state, year-in and year-out, and we hung right with them up until the end. We are returning a lot of good players next year and I think we can make the next step and get further next time around.”
On. Oct. 22, it was Maura Ballard’s singles victory that clinched the day for Anna. Two other matches still underway were then stopped since the Coyotes had reached the required 10 wins in the 19-match format.
Anna swept all five of the completed Girls Singles matches and all three Girls Doubles matches. Melissa won four of the five completed Boys Singles matches and two of three Boys Doubles matches. The Cards claimed the tight Mixed Doubles contest.
“It was hard-fought, as usual,” Anna head coach Vince Sharp said. “There wasn’t a time up until the very end that I thought it was over, by any means. Every time we play them it’s a battle. They’ve had such a good year. Our district, all four teams in the third round of the playoffs again, it’s just cool to see such a strong level of tennis in this area.”
“I was just so proud of our kids,” Melissa head coach Brad Crawford said. “We started on the 28th of July and they just never quit working. We played a tough match. We lost a couple of heartbreakers in the middle that would have been the difference. … We were up in the two matches that were still on. We’d won the first set in those so those looked like wins for us. To lose to a good team, there’s no shame in that — and Anna’s a good team. Congratulations to them and their coach.”
The Coyotes won their district match with Melissa, 12-7, on Sept. 10. Anna finished district play as the No. 2 seed from District 11-4A and the Cardinals advanced as a third seed.
