ANNA — Collinsville rallied to defeat Anna’s Lady Coyotes in five sets on Friday in non-district volleyball action at Anna High School. After dropping the first set, 18-25, the Class 2A Lady Pirates claimed three of the next four — 25-22, 25-19, 13-25, 15-12 — for the win.

“We didn’t take care of business tonight,” Anna head coach Tomika Crosby said. “We weren’t consistent in our play. One minute we were up, swinging well, playing defense and moving. And the next minute we’d let two or three balls hit the floor with us not diving on the floor to get them. … If you play that way, you don’t win at the end of the day.

“I asked them what they could have done differently and each one was able to tell me things they need to work on, things they should have done. I told them this is the time to fix it because if we don’t we’re going to get to district and we’re not going to be able to compete.”

Qua Fisher and Aubreanna Traylor led Anna (1-7) with 13 kills each and Rachel Goade added 11. Gracie Goade posted a team-high four assist-blocks while Lexi Stewart and Traylor collected three each. Setters Haley Thornburg and Gracie Goade tallied 23 and 18 set-assists, respectively.

Thornburg also led the Lady Coyotes with three service aces. Fisher dug up a team-high 25 balls and libero Alana Pina was next with 18.

In crucial Set 2, Anna held a comfortable 18-10 lead and appeared to be cruising to a 2-0 lead in the match. But the Lady Pirates (11-4) bounced back late for a 3-point win and played with confidence the rest of the way.

“We quit playing scared,” Collinsville head coach Melissa Johnson said. “Just because we’re playing a bigger school doesn’t mean our game changes. I think they finally realized once they could hang that it was doable and they believed in themselves. That was the trigger that it took to get the chemistry and the energy going.”

Johnson noted that her team’s four losses to date came against bigger schools at the recent Denton Ryan tournament, where the Lady Pirates won the Consolation Silver bracket.

On Aug. 13, Anna lost another tough five-set match, this time at 3A Bonham, 27-29, 26-28, 25-23, 26-24, 12-15. Thornburg served up a team-high six aces and Pina added three. Stewart’s 11 kills were tops for the Lady Coyotes and she was in on five blocks.

Pina led logged a team-high 18 digs and Fisher claimed 16. Thornburg collected 17 set-assists and Gracie Goade added 15.
