In their season-opener at home last week, Anna’s Lady Coyotes downed Class 3A Pilot Point three sets to one — 25-21, 13-25, 28-26, 25-20.

Lexi Stewart led Anna with eight kills, followed by six each from Breanna Traylor and Qua Fisher. Gracie Goade posted 17 assists and 11 digs, both team-highs for the Lady Coyotes. Haley Thornburg finished with 16 assists while Saniya Myers and Alana Pina collected nine digs each.

“Lexi Stewart and Bre really worked the net,” Anna head coach Tomika Crosby said. “They had had good position and were getting stops — at least slowing the ball down. And Saniya was very consistent with her serve. At one point she had maybe six or seven in a row.”

At the Nike/ASC tournament last weekend in Carrollton, the Lady Coyotes were topped in their five matches — falling to Class 5A Aledo, 4A Commerce and Plano East JV in Friday’s pool play, and to Lovejoy JV2 and 3A Callisburg in Saturday’s consolation play.

This massive best-of-three-sets tournament is held in the cavernous Advantage Sports Complex, home to Texas Advantage Volleyball. Throughout the day, as many of 12 — loud — matches are going on at once.

Against Aledo Friday morning, the Lady Cats rolled in set one 25-11, but Anna fought back in set two before coming up short 25-22. The match was tied at 22-all before three-straight Lady Cat kills closed it out. Pina posted two service aces for the Lady Coyotes and Fisher led the team with five kills. Thornburg and Gracie Goade collected eight and six assists, respectively.

“Anytime you play in this gym, it’s loud, it’s hard to focus,” Crosby said after the match. “It’s easy to be distracted. Our biggest struggle was staying focused. We did some good things. But we did not do a good job passing the ball in the first game. We did a better job in the second game. … It was just not doing those little things defensively, not getting stops at the net as much as we should have, and being out of position.”

In the match against Commerce, Fisher had a team-high five kills and Pina logged eight digs. In the Plano East JV match, Fisher and Pina led Anna with nine digs each and Gracie Goade collected five kills and 11 set-assists.
