Melissa’s Lady Cardinals came away with four wins in their six matches at the Wimberley Tex-Fest volleyball tournament over the weekend at Wimberley High School in the Texas Hill Country. The Lady Cards, now 4-3 on the season, finished 11th in the 32-team field for third place in the Gold Consolation Bracket.


In Friday’s pool play, Melissa defeated Class 3A Hardin 2-0 and Saint Mary’s Hall 2-0, before falling to Class 4A Stephenville 2-0.


On Saturday, the Lady Cards topped Class 3A East Chambers 2-0, then dropped one to New Braunfels Christian Academy 2-0. NBCA’s Wildcats were TAPPS 3 state finalists a year ago and have a Stanford signee and a TCU signee on their roster.


Melissa closed out tournament play with a 2-0 win over Class 4A Canyon Lake.


Lady Cards outside hitter Caroline Kasson had a team-high 47 kills for the tournament with a .398 hitting percentage.


“That’s the highest number she’s ever hit, especially over the course of six matches,” head coach Frank DePaolo said.


Kasson also posted a team-high eight blocks while Ally Marshall and Alexis McCombs knocked back five and four, respectively. Other big hitters for Melissa at Wimberley were Brooklee Waltrip with 23 kills and KG Matthews with 17. Matthews’ 97 set-assists led the Lady Cards and Ella Branson added 91. George, from her libero position, collected 13 set-assists.


George also slapped a team-high 11 service aces, putting 95-percent of her attempts in. Her 2.9 passing rating led Melissa as well, followed by Waltrip’s 2.6 and Mallory Power’s 2.5.
