ANNA — In their first outing of the season, the Anna High team tennis claimed a 12-7 win over Class 5A Tyler John Tyler at the Anna Sports Complex — better known this Aug. 7 afternoon as The Purple Griddle. Temperatures reached 102 degrees, as the Coyotes swept six Girls Singles matches and three Boys Doubles matches en route to victory.
Anna head coach Vince Sharp said these match conditions were the hottest yet for this venue that opened two-and-a-half years ago.
For its part, John Tyler claimed five of the six Boys Singles matches and also posted a win in Mixed Doubles and one in Girls Doubles. To get the most out of their bus ride north, the Lions had played at Argyle earlier in the day. A solid opponent, John Tyler was a playoff team last year, losing to perennially-strong Texarkana High in the first round.
Key Coyotes back this year include First-Team All-District pick Jesus Garrido, last year’s boys’ team MVP; Andrea Alvarez, the district singles champ last year; and All-District selectee Simon Geren. A promising newcomer for Anna is freshman Morgan Sharp, a USTA Texas championship-level player.
Several key Coyotes have graduated from last year’s regional-semifinal squad, including four-time First-Team All-District pick Rowdy Lairson, and First-Team All-District doubles partners Mary Beth Geren and Angel Dube, who won the district doubles title each of the last two years.
“It’s a slight rebuild (this year),” Sharp said. “But we have a lot of good players coming in and we feel like we’re going to be just fine. We’d like to get back to the regional tournament again, for the second year in a row. That’s the farthest we’ve ever gone. We’d love to get another shot at getting to state. We also want to break the school record for most wins in a season (eight). Last year we tied it.”
