COMMERCE – While no Anna Lady Coyotes qualified for state at the Class 4A Region 2 Track and Field Championships on April 26-27 at Texas A&M University-Commerce, some fine efforts were turned in.

In the 4x400-meter relay finals, Jazmin Pender, Hayleigh Wagner, Bre Traylor and Rachael Readus put on a strong fourth-place showing, one-half second off bronze-medal time at 4 minutes and 4.79 seconds.

“Last night [in prelims], they all put it together,” head coach Scott O’Connor said. “That’s what we asked them to do. We asked them to treat it like the finals because that needed to be their mindset. And they all got out fast, finished fast. They did a really good job.”

In addition to the relay, O’Connor noted the performances of Madison Hemenway in the 3,200-meter run; Caroline Boykin in the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs; and Skyla Mackey in the 800-meter run.

“It’s been tough races but our girls have raced really well,” he said. “They’ve done really good preparation for this meet.”

Of Boykin and Hemenway in the 3,200, O’Connor said the girls ran solid races.

“It wasn’t there to qualify [for state] but, man, they put it all on the track,” he said. “I was really proud of them.”

As for Mackey in the 800, O’Connor said, she ran right to the race plan that he wanted her to.

“Again, the time wasn’t there but that’s OK,” he said. “She ran a really solid race, executed it as best as she could. It was a great way for her and Madison to finish off their senior year.”
