On April 16 at the Jesse Owens Complex in Dallas, the Melissa Cardinals rolled to their third-straight area track and field title – their fourth in the last five years. At this District 11/12-4A meet, the Cards qualified a program-record 18 athletes in 12 events for the regional championships which is slated for April 26-27 at Commerce.


Melissa tallied a meet best of 150 points, 46 more than second-place Dallas Carter, while Celina claimed third with 101 points.


The first four individual finishers in each event qualified for regionals.


Distance runners Judson Greer, Jackson Scribner and Lucas Tauch all advanced for the Cards, with Greer, Scribner and Tauch taking gold, silver and fourth place, respectively, in the 3,200 meters. Greer and Tauch also claimed gold and silver, respectively, in the 1,600 meters.


In field events, five Cards advanced to regionals including Caleb Kroese, silver in the shot put; Carlos Branch, silver in the long jump; Ryan Johnson, fourth in high jump; and Jaylyn Haliburton-Jones and Antjuan Turner, gold and bronze, respectively, in the triple jump.


In the running finals, Branch, Antonio Robinson, Braylon Brown and Ja’Bray Young took silver in the 4X100-meter relay while Young and Kennedy Lewis claimed gold and silver, respectively, in the 100-meter dash.


In the 4x200 relay, Young and Lewis joined Robinson and Chanse Holiday to win another gold, this time with Young coming from behind on the final leg. It was the team’s second-fastest time of the year.


Haliburton-Jones also claimed bronze in the 400 meters and Holiday took fourth in the 200 meters. The Cards’ 4x400 relay of Trevon Cook, Haliburton-Jones, Holiday and Matt Hahn qualified as well with a come-from-behind fourth-place finish.
