THE COLONY – Against top-seeded Carrollton Ranchview out of District 10-4A on Thursday, Anna’s Lady Coyotes were defeated, 3-0, in a Class 4A Region 2 bi-district match-up at The Colony High School.
The Lady Wolves scored in the first minute of the match and the play seemed to take the wind out of Anna’s purple-and-white sails. “I think the first goal kind of did us in a little bit,” Lady Coyotes first-year head coach Marlon Madrigal said. “We got into our minds, ‘Oh, no, it’s going to go the same way it always does.’ It’s a mentality thing. And it’s a process fixing that kind of mentality. … In the early part of the second half, we were connecting passes, we were building a play, and that last pass never was a great pass. We just could never get over it.”
Ranchview led, 2-0, at the break.
On that first goal, the ball was saved at the right-side end line and kicked to Lady Wolf Donna Samani in the middle. Samani’s close-range, straight-on shot was batted back by freshman goalkeeper Payton Wickliffe, but Samani got it in on the rebound.
Wickliffe worked the whole match for Anna, drawing praise from Madrigal. “Payton had three amazing saves,” he said, “[including] a diving save, a save that was out of nowhere. She stuck her hand out and she barely got it out. She is amazing and I am so happy she’s coming back.”
After a fourth-place district finish this season, Madrigal now looks forward to Year 2 at the Lady Coyotes’ helm. “I’m very, very glad I’m here because there’s so much clay to mold. We’re going the right direction, that’s the main thing. This first year, we’ve turned it around in the right direction. Now let’s try to get up the hill and then go down the hill. As long as the kids react correctly to what I’m asking for I think we’re going to improve and improve.”
