Melissa volleyball players made a fine showing at the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior Nationals in Detroit from June 25-July 4.
The Frisco Flyers 11 — with Erin Anderson and Isabel De La Cruz — placed third out of 48 teams in the 11 National division while Susan Blake’s TIV 17 Mizuno Dylan squad claiming third out of 36 teams in the 17 Open division.
Brooklee Waltrip and Lonestar 14 Red tied for fifth with Chelsea George of the Madfrog 14 National Blue team in that 36-team 14 Open division. Caroline Kasson of the Victory 16 Elite Black placed 13th out of 36 teams in the 16 USA division. Kenzie Segleski of the Arete 13 Navy finished 27th out of the 64-team 13 American division.
“I’m so proud of each of these young ladies,” Melissa Head Volleyball Coach Frank DePaolo said. “Their dedication to a passion is awesome to see. I’d also like to recognize all those Lady Cardinals who participated in club volleyball last spring but were not members of a team that made it to Nationals. The number of Lady Cardinals participating in volleyball outside of school continues to grow and will make the entire program strong and competitive far into the future.”
The Lady Cards begin preparation for the 2018 season with Upper Level Team Camp from July 30-31. Two-a-day practices start Aug. 1, with a first scrimmage at Little Elm on Aug. 4. Two days later, the team will play all-day scrimmages at home versus Denison, Sherman, Blue Ridge and Dallas Woodrow Wilson.
Melissa’s season opener is Aug. 7 at home versus McKinney North. The varsity Lady Cards then travel to Pearland, Aug. 9-11, for the John Turner Classic where they’ll compete against 88 Class 4A, 5A and 6A schools. The district-opener is Sept. 21, at home versus Anna.
