On Saturday, June 9, Anna High School welcomed its second-ever U. S. Tennis Association Challenger event, the beginning level of competitive tennis for junior players seeking to amass points toward being a USTA championship-level player. Matches for this Challenger were also held simultaneously at Princeton and Lucas Lovejoy high schools. Boys and girls, ages 10 through 18, participated.

“The Challenger was another big success this year,” Anna head tennis coach Vince Sharp said. “We had a number of local kids getting into USTA for the first time. It was great for local tennis.”

Anna’s Morgan Sharp upset No. 1 seed Mia Rodriguez of Fort Worth, 4-3, 4-2, in the quarterfinals of the Girls 14 division at Anna before falling to South Lake’s Laura Zhang. In Girls 12, Ella Sharp lost in the quarterfinals to eventual champion Nicole Steel of Prosper, 4-0, 4-1, then rebounded to top Abilene Raines of Denton, 4-0, 5-3, and Jessica Raines of Wichita Falls, 4-0, 4-0, for the consolation medal. In Boys 14 action, Ryan Lamar won his round of 16 match against Alexander Martin of Roanoke, 4-0, 4-1, before losing in the quarterfinals to No. 4 seed William Reikse of Flower Mound.

Texas has now hosted over 20 of these 1-day USTA Challengers. At Anna last summer, Ella Sharp won the Co-ed 10 division and Morgan reached the finals in her division.
