Melissa Lady Cardinal basketball players Taylor Thomas and Sally Clemmons have been named to the 2018 Class 4A All-State team by the Texas Girls Coaches Association. Thomas, a senior guard, was the MVP of District 11-4A last season and finished her career with 1,097 points. She led the team in assists in 2018 with 3.5 per game and was second in scoring — 12.1 points per game — and second in steals — 2.8 per game. Thomas was a 37-percent 3-point shooter. She will continue her playing career at Texas Woman’s University in Denton.

Clemmons, a junior guard, was the district’s Defensive MVP and led the Lady Cards in scoring with 14.1 points per game. She also averaged a team-high three steals per game and was second in assists — 3.4 per game — and third in rebounds — 4.5 per game.

Clemmons and Thomas both made the district’s All-Academic squad as well.

“I’m very proud of the selection of Taylor Thomas and Sally Clemmons for All-State,” Melissa head coach Heather Lane said. “When you nominate kids for a state-wide award, you hope coaches know coaches who know coaches to pass the word along, ‘Those Melissa girls can play!’ The girls have worked so hard for years to play at a high level. I’m thankful they were chosen to reward their efforts.”

The Lady Cards won 32 games in 2018, posting a perfect 10-0 district record for the second-straight year and reaching the regional quarterfinals in the playoffs.

Melissa Lady Card basketball players Taylor Carney and Charley Lane have been selected to the 2018 Class 4A Academic All-State team by the Texas Girls Coaches Association. Senior forward Carney and junior forward Lane were First-Team All-District picks last season and key members of Melissa’s playoff run to the regional quarterfinals.

“Taylor Carney and Charley Lane are both in the top 10-percent of their class and excellent student/athletes,” Coach Lane said. “It makes a coach’s x-and-o job much easier when you have kids who can help ‘coach’ on the court.”
