Former Anna High School track star Elijah Smith, now running for Hutchinson Community College in Kansas, earned All-American honors at the National Junior College Athletic Association indoor national track and field championships, March 2-3, in Lubbock. Smith, a 2017 Anna graduate, earned the distinction as part of Hutchinson’s 4X400-meter relay which finished seventh in a 21-team field in school-record time of 3 minutes, 14.42 seconds. For his leg in the race, Smith ran a time of 47.29 seconds. Athletes finishing in the Top 8 in their events at nationals are awarded the title of All-American.

Smith also qualified for these championships in the 600-meter run and placed 16th.

A four-year varsity track athlete for the Coyotes and three-time team MVP, Smith holds school records in the triple jump, the 400-meter dash, the 4x200-meter relay and the 4x400-meter relay. As a freshman, he was a member of Anna’s state-qualifying 4X400 relay team and returned to state a year later in the 400 meters. As a four-year starter for Anna’s basketball team, he played a large role in the team winning two district titles and also nabbed All-District and Defensive MVP honors along the way.

Smith is the son of Tawana Smith of Anna.
