In their first meet of the season, the Melissa boys varsity track team placed fourth in a tough seven-team field at the Lovejoy Invitational on Saturday, March 3, at Lovejoy High School. Lovejoy took first place with 181 points, followed by Argyle and Dallas Jesuit.

“It was a very competitive meet,” head coach Travis Roberson said. “It was our first meet of the season due to weather cancellation of the McKinney Boyd meet. I was very pleased with the overall performance.”

Several Cardinals turned in top performances including freshman Judson Greer, who set a new Melissa school record in the 800 meters with a first-place time of 2 minutes, 03.09 seconds. In the 100-meter dash, Kennedy Lewis and Ja’Bray Young took first and second place, respectively, with times of 11.01 seconds and 11.31 seconds. Matt Hahn won the 400-meter race in a time of 52.82 seconds and the 4x200-meter relay team of Jason Baker, Kennedy Lewis, Braylon Brown and Ja’Bray Young took first with a time of 1 minute, 31.85 seconds.

Jackson Scribner placed second in the 3,200 meters, finishing in 9 minutes, 55.3 seconds. Greer claimed second in the 1,600 meters with a time of 4 minutes, 33.1 seconds and Scribner took third, completing the race in 4 minutes, 36.59 seconds.

In the high jump, Cole McCraw earned second place, clearing 6 feet, 2 inches, while Josh Wood’s leap of 6 feet took third. McCraw also placed fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.74 seconds. Shot-putter Cale Hayes finished second with a throw of 47 feet, 5 inches.

The 4X400 relay team of Dion Galbreath, Hahn, Jaylynn Jones and Lucas Tauch claimed fifth with a time of 3 minutes, 44.78 seconds. And in the triple jump, BJ Lewis took fourth with a leap of 38 feet, 8 inches while Jones finished fifth, with a distance of 38 feet, 3 inches.
