Melissa senior Gunnar Murphy broke his own school record in the shot put at the Lovejoy Invitational track meet on Saturday, March 4, with a throw of 59 feet, three inches. The toss not only beat his previous mark by six feet, but also set a new Lovejoy meet record.
“To add to that impressive feat, it now puts him as the state (Class) 4A leader in the shot,” Cardinals head coach Travis Roberson said.
Murphy also finished second in the discus throw with a heave of 142 feet.
Melissa faithful had plenty more reasons to smile this day as the Cardinals went up against a field loaded with Class 5A and 6A completion, as well as large private schools.
Other top finishers for Melissa’s varsity boys included:
• Josh Wood - third in the high jump; 5 feet, 10 inches
• Matt Hahn, Jason Baker, Junior Castleberry and Marvin Jordan - third in the 4x200-meter relay; 1 minute, 37.02 seconds
• Gabe Rodriguez, fifth in the pole vault; 12 feet, 6 inches
• Taner Bigbee, sixth in the high jump; 5 feet, 8 inches
Roberson noted that the Cardinals as a team, though short-handed due to spring break, still finished seventh out of 14 schools in the varsity competition.
