Van Alstyne’s Lady Panthers bested the Anna Lady Coyotes, 15-12, to open the softball season on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Anna High School’s new facility. Van Alstyne pulled away in the fifth inning with a 3-0 spurt to lead, 14-9, then withstood the Lady Coyotes’ late rally.
Sophomore Hannah Howell had four hits in five at-bats, including three doubles, with five RBIs and three runs scored. Anna freshman Lauren Kerns went 3-for-4 at the plate, all singles, and scored three runs. Freshman Shelby Dombrowski belted a triple for the Lady Coyotes, with two RBIs and two runs scored. Madison Davis, a junior, stroked a single and double in four at-bats for Anna and scored two runs, with a stolen base. Junior Natalie Koenig went three-for-five at the plate, including a double, with two RBIs, and senior Hailee Anderson had a single and a double.
Howell also pitched, coming on in the third inning with the Lady Panthers leading, 6-5. She struck out eight over five innings, allowing five runs on eight hits. Grace Price opened on the mound for the Lady Coyotes, allowing four runs on six hits in two innings of work.
