Anna Coyotes, Lady Coyotes fall to Argyle
The Anna Coyotes dropped their district-opener at Argyle, 4-0, on Tuesday, Feb. 14. The Eagles scored two goals per half enroute to the shutout.
“We out-shot them,” Anna head coach Matt Ellis said, “but they were just more clinical with their finishing and caught us out on counter-attacks a couple of times.”
This match was originally scheduled for Monday, Feb. 13, at Coyote Stadium but was changed as a consideration for funeral arrangements after the death of an Argyle player’s family member. Anna’s match on March 6, slated at Argyle, will be played at Coyote Stadium.
In the early match on Tuesday, the Lady Coyotes fell to Argyle, 7-0, moving Anna’s district mark to 0-2.
Lady Cards dump Celina, take first place
Melissa’s Lady Cardinals defeated Celina, 3-1, at home on Monday, Feb. 13, to take over sole possession of first place in District 5-4A with a 3-0 mark. The Lady Bobcats, previously undefeated in district play, fell behind early on a long-shot goal by Kendall Bates that found a bottom corner of the net. Before the first half ended, the Lady Cards struck again on a redirect by Emma Shaeffer off a cross pass from Gillian Stopinski.
Celina responded with a goal after the break but that was soon erased by another Shaeffer goal off a cross, this time from Josie Monk. Lady Cards head coach Manuel Avila called Monk’s pass “brilliant” and credited Shaeffer for beating the Lady Bobcats’ defense and goalkeeper, then “walking the ball into the net.”
