The Melissa Middle School eighth grade boys’ basketball team competed in the district tournament over the weekend. They played two games and came out victorious, winning the district championship.

In the first game, the Cardinals faced Anna and came out on top at 54-42. Leading scorers for Melissa were Antonio Robinson, 22, Dillon Fortenberry, 9, Bryce Martin, 8, Parker Taylor, 7, Ethan Byard, 3, Chanse Holiday, 2, Lucas Tauch, 1 and Daxx Dunnahoe 1.

Melissa then faced Celina in the championship game, which turned into a heated contest throughout. Melissa won the first quarter at 14-9 and went into the half up four points.

Leading by three with four seconds remaining, Celina drove the length of the court, putting up a desperation three-pointer and banking it in at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.

A big three by Daxx Dunnahoe, and key free-throws from Antonio Robinson and Dillon Fortenberry, sealed the victory for Melissa in overtime with a final score of 46-44.

Leading scorers for Melissa were Antonio Robinson, 19, Daxx Dunnahoe, 9, Bryce Martin, 5, Parker Taylor, 4, Colton Wittwer, 3, Jack Richardson, 2, and Dillon Fortenberry, 2.

The eighth grade Cardinals finished the season as District Champions with a district record of 11-1 and overall record of 12-3.
