Lady Cards thump North Lamar, look to district
“In the final tune-up for district play, the Lady Cards could not have produced a better effort,” Melissa head coach Manuel Avila said of his team’s 7-0 win on the grass pitch at North Lamar. “Once they got their feet under them the rout was on.”
Emma Shaeffer opened the Lady Cards’ scoring followed by two more before halftime by Gillian Stopinski.
Melissa’s Kendall Bates added another goal minutes into the second half, with another by Shaeffer close behind. Lady Card Destiny Waddles scored her first goal of the season and Josie Monk added one as well to close things out.
District play begins for Melissa at Argyle on Feb. 7.
Cards shutout North Lamar on the road
August Greer scored a goal for Melissa in the match’s first minute and the Cardinals went on to defeat North Lamar, 4-0. Cristhyn Venancio set up the score with a pass after forcing a turnover by a Panther defender in North Lamar’s end of the field. The Cards added three more goals in the second half, two by Jose Malpica and one by Ulyses Convento, his career first. Malpica was back in Melissa’s line-up for this match after an absence due to injury.
The Cards open district play at Argyle on Feb. 7.
