The Anna Coyotes held off a fourth-quarter charge at Van Alstyne on Tuesday afternoon to wrap up their pre-holiday schedule with a 60-58 win over the Panthers.

Leading by a dozen going into the final period, it took a basket by Donald Maloid and a 3-pointer by Lawrence Goade to secure the non-district win.

Goade’s fourth, 3-ball of the game and the team’s ninth, gave the Coyotes a 5-point lead with just over a minute to play.

A 3-pointer by Van Alstyne junior Tyler Sperry cut the lead to three before Maloid and Keamoni Mattocks connected on three free throws to lock up the win.

The visitors quickly jumped out to a 10-point lead in the first quarter after a 12-0 run. Mattocks sent in three from deep in the opening period and Goade had back-to-back 3-balls midway through the period.

Mattocks finished with 16 points and Goade had 12 in the contest.

The Panthers cut into that lead in the second, scoring a pair of baskets from beyond the arc, cutting the lead to just eight at the half.

Three-point shots by Elijah Smith and Forrest Durret opened the Anna scoring in the second half and a late 3-ball by Goade gave the Coyotes their biggest lead, 48-35.

Anna’s offense went cold early in the final period. A basket by Smith and one by Mattocks made it a 50-41 game early in the quarter.

Van Alstyne went on an 11-2 run to tie the game, 52-52 with four minutes left in the contest.

Maloid and Goade gave the visitors some breathing room with their shots and a last second 3-pointer by Van Alstyne junior Noah Boling finished off the two-point game.

Anna’s next basketball action will come on December 28th in Leonard as the Coyotes face S&S in the Leonard Tournament
