Just the thing the Anna Lady Coyotes needed — a match up with the state’s No. 1, Class 2A girls’ basketball team to open the 2016 Highway 5 Classic Tournament. And they had to do it without their number one scorer, junior Hannah Heath. She suffered an injury that kept her out of the tournament and could sideline her for the remainder of the season.
Of the eight girls’ teams entered, none came with higher credentials than Dodd City. In the 2015-16 season, this team lost by five in the regional finals to the eventual state champs from Lipan.
Anna lost the opening game of the tourney to Dodd City, 65-10.
Senior Avery Oonk and sophomore Hannah Howell each scored four points in the loss.
McKinney Christian 51, Anna 39
Marianna Bert scored 15 points and Jashell Evans added 12, but a second-half rally by McKinney Christian could not be answered by the Lady Coyotes as they lost, 51-39.
Mariana Bert had 15 points and Jashell Evans added a dozen.
Prosper JV 40, Anna 23
Senior Savannah Kendall scored eight points and senior Avery Oonk added six in Anna’s 40-23 loss to the Prosper junior varsity squad.
The Lady Coyotes only managed three points in the first period and they could not recover from that slow start.
Anna 51, Community 29
The Lady Coyotes finished off the 2016 Highway 5 Classic tournament with a win.
Trailing by one at the half, Anna outscored the Lady Braves 38-15 in the second period to get the victory.
Freshman Marianna Bert had 15 points to lead the Lady Coyote offense.
Anna will host a strong Bells team on Dec. 13 and close out the pre-holiday schedule, hosting Pilot Point on Dec. 19.
