At the Fairfield Tournament in Fairfield, Texas, on Thursday, Dec. 1, the Lady Cardinals rallied to defeat Crockett, 44-35, with a strong third quarter. Trailing the Class 3A Lady Bulldogs, 17-8, after one stanza, Melissa (5-5) rolled big after halftime with a 20-2 third-quarter surge.
Senior Krista Butterfield collected 13 points to lead the Lady Cards, with sophomore Charley Lane and junior Taylor Carney dropping in 8 and 7 points, respectively.
On Friday, against the Madisonville Lady Mustangs of District 18-4A, Melissa came up short, 47-35, as Madisonville’s victory margins came in the first and third quarters. The Lady Mustangs (7-1) led, 27-18, at the break.
Sophomore Sally Clemons led the Lady Cardinals with 10 points, with senior Lauren Brown and sophomore Skyla Mackey adding 6 points each.
Against Class 4A China Spring later in the day, Melissa was bested, 51-40, as the Lady Cougars pulled away with 10-2 and 11-5 runs in the second and third quarters, respectively. Lady Cardinal junior Natalie Conlin posted a team-best 15 points in the loss, with Lane finding the net for 10. China Spring’s Gabrielle Cleveland led all scorers with 16 points.
On Saturday, Dec. 3, the tournament’s final day, Melissa (5-8) fell to the Class 5A Bryan Lady Vikings, 55-46, after trailing, 28-23, at the half. Bryan (5-3) was led by Kee Kee Nowlin’s game-high 17 points.
Butterfield was again the top Lady Cardinals’ scorer, this time with 9 points, as Carney tallied 8 and Conlin and Clemmons each produced 7.
