The Class 5A Lovejoy Lady Leopards topped Melissa, 55-36, on Tuesday, Nov. 29, at Lovejoy High School. Lovejoy (6-1) rolled to a 9-2 first-quarter lead and never trailed. Melissa’s top scorers on the evening were junior Natalie Conlin, with 12 points, and sophomore Sally Clemmons, with 9.
The Lady Cardinals (4-5) opened the game nabbing two quick turnovers but Lovejoy soon gained control. During the Lady Leopards’ initial 9-0 run, Melissa’s first two apparent field goals were erased by referee judgments. On the first, a charge was called on senior Krista Butterfield and later Conlin was fouled on a layup, but no bucket was awarded. Melissa’s first points would not come until Conlin’s drive-to-the-bucket layup with less than a minute left in the first quarter.
Melissa was whistled for 25 fouls in the contest while Lovejoy collected 11, resulting in five free throw chances for the Lady Cards to 35 for the Lady Leopards.
Lovejoy’s lone loss so far came in its season-opener against Class 6A Midland Lee, by two points.
