Melissa’s Cardinals lost to the Class 4A Fairfield Eagles, 69-38, on Thursday, Dec. 1, on the first day of the Fairfield Tournament. The Cards fell behind early, 23-8, after one quarter of play and trailed the whole way. Sophomore Matt Holloway and freshman Brendon Lewis led Melissa scorers with 9 points each.
The next morning, the Cards bounced back for an 83-58 win over the Class 1A Oakwood Panthers, as Melissa’s Lewis led the way with a game-high 18 points. Oakwood led after one stanza, 19-14, but quickly faded as the Cards regained the lead by halftime and commanded the fourth quarter, 28-12.
In the afternoon, Melissa fell to District 17-4A’s Waco La Vega Pirates, 48-42, in the Silver Bracket semi-finals. The Cards broke out to an 18-9 lead in this one, but couldn’t maintain it, scoring only single-digits in each of the final three quarters. The big man, senior Hunter Campbell, led Melissa scorers with 10 points, followed by sophomores Junior Castleberry and Kaedric Cobbs with 9 and 8 points, respectively.
On Saturday, the Cards (2-3) tripped up Mexia’s Black Cats of District 18-4A, 48-45, to close out their three-day excursion down I-45. Melissa overcame putting up just 1 point in the second quarter to secure the win. The Cards trailed, 24-15, at halftime.
Melissa head coach Eric Benton called it “a good win for us.”
Senior Gunnar Murphy led the Cards with 14 points and Holloway added 11 as Melissa put the game away with an 18-6 fourth-quarter run.
