After a powerhouse performance from both Anna and Melissa squads, Bryce Welsh stepped up to the plate to swing in the final runs of the game, cementing a Cardinal rally. Welsh’s hit scored the winning run for Melissa in the sixth inning on Tuesday, resulting in a 6-4 victory over Anna on the Coyotes’ home turf in what is always an intense rivalry.
Melissa pitcher Andrew Cole kept the Anna hitters from closing the scoring gap as he pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed no earned runs, giving up four hits and two walks with one strikeout. Coyote pitcher Braydon Houston fought hard, as well, but despite two strikeouts and one walk, Houston surrendered six runs to Melissa.
Anna showed hustle as it scored the first two runs of the game, securing an early 2-0 lead. The Coyotes took the lead right off the bat at the top of the first inning when Houston hit a ground ball to short stop, giving Matt Lagrone the opening he needed to make a run for home and moving Daniel Scott to third base.
Lawrence Goad stepped up to the plate for the Coyotes in the bottom of the first inning and hit a grounder to Cardinal pitcher Welsh on the mound. Goade was tagged out before reaching first base, but the shuffle gave Scott the chance he needed to score the run for Anna.
Anna advanced its lead to 4-1 in the top of the fifth inning with a run scored by Lagrone on an error by the Cardinals’ second baseman. The run was the last scored by the Coyotes for the remainder of the game.
Melissa’s Brady Morrison hit into a fielder’s choice to get on base in the sixth inning. Morrison followed up by taking second base on a single by Cody Jackson. The Cardinals took the game in a firestorm of five runs, all scored in the bottom of the frame. They came on a fielder’s choice to short stop from a ground ball by Morrison, which took Krisjon Segleski across the plate and put Dalton Vestal on third base. Vestal came home for the Cardinals’ second run of the inning.
Welsh contributed to the Cardinals’ sixth inning blowout with a line drive to right field, scoring Morrison and Jackson and moving Tate Whittington to third base. Whittington scored the final run of the game for Melissa.
