Melissa continued its District 12-3A domination with wins over Bonham and Princeton. The Cardinals will close out their 2013 regular season with a home game against Anna on Friday, and with a win they will finish their first season competing at the Class 3A level a perfect 8-0 in district play.
Melissa defeated the Panthers 5-4 at Princeton on Tuesday, despite being out-hit eight to four.
The Panthers were led by a flawless day at the dish by Kyle Petersen, who went 2-2 against Melissa’s pitching. He singled in the third and fifth innings.
Tyler West got the win for Melissa. He allowed four runs over five innings. West struck out eight, walked two and gave up eight hits.
Melissa didn’t relinquish the lead after scoring three runs in the first inning when it scored on a passed ball, a groundout by JC Cottrell, and an RBI single by Zak Beasley.
The Panthers got two-run rallies in the first inning and the fifth. In the first, the Panthers scored on an RBI single by Dylan Loftice, scoring Logan Bolsinger.
Melissa scored one run in the third inning and followed it up with one more in the fifth. In the third, Melissa scored when West was hit by a pitch, bringing home Beasley.
After pushing across two runs in the bottom of the fifth, the Panthers faced just a 5-4 deficit. A passed ball and an RBI single by Jacob Ludwig gave the Panthers life. The game went final when Ryan Reed struck out.
Cade Cruce had a home run and led the Cardinals from the plate in their 9-1 win over Bonham on Friday. Landon Wilson went 3-for-4 from the plate and had four RBIs.
Melissa scored two in the opening inning and added two more runs before Bonham was able to get on the board.
The Cardinals added two in the fourth and three in the fifth as they cruised to victory.
