Despite a slow start to the season, the Anna Lady Coyotes were able to get a big win on their first official day of spring break – a date which also coincided with the start of district play.
Anna played host to Melissa in its first matchup of the season and it was the home team that came out triumphant with a 12-4 win to open district.
Kaitlin Gibbon dominated from inside the circle for the Lady Coyotes, pitching all seven innings and allowing just four runs on five hits. Melissa’s Stolle Voigt and Kelsey Smith split time in the circle, giving up 12 runs and 10 hits in the game.
The Lady Cards came to the plate first and were able to get two on board early with two walks. Those runners, however, were left stranded after three straight outs.
Voigt helped retire Anna in the bottom of the frame, facing just three batters.
Melissa went three-up, three-down and the Lady Coyotes capitalized in the bottom of the second as Kendal Howard had an RBI single to left field that scored Danielle Gonzales. Howard and Breeanna Dilldine were left standed to end the inning.
Anna’s lead was short lived, however, as Melissa’s bats came to life in the third. Madison Beodecker came across the plate to tie the score, and the Lady Cardinals were able to go ahead on a strange, out-not out-two-run home run play. Let us explain: Bailey Church was on second when Haley Hill came to bat. Hill struck out but the Anna catcher dropped the ball which made it a live play. The throw to first was mishandled, advancing the runners and then the throw to third was off allowing both Church and Hill to score and give Melissa a two-run advantage.
Looking to keep the game from slipping out of its grasp, Anna took to the field. A single by Gonzales advanced Hailey Wood and Gibbon, loading the bases. A single by Ashlynn Love scored Wood.
With the bases loaded, Voigt walked in Dilldine and Jaci Richardson, giving Anna a one-run advantage and forcing a pitching change for the Lady Cardinals. Bailey Prince was then hit by a pitch and Haylee Chamness hit a two-RBI double to put Anna ahead 7-3.
In the top of the fifth, Melissa was able to cut into the lead when Hill hit an RBI double to center field to score Smith.
Anna answered in the bottom of the frame as Prince hit a looper that scored Dilldine.
In the bottom of the sixth, Anna added to its lead with four runs to put the game away.
The Lady Cardinals are off until March 21, when they continue their district schedule against Community. Anna will play host to Community on Tuesday.
