Last year, the Anna Girls Soccer squad made history when it qualified for the UIL playoffs by taking fourth in district. This year, the team looks to build on that success and make an even bigger splash when it takes the field next week.
Coach Kelley Pitzer is returning to the sidelines for the fifth season to lead the ladies. In his favor is that fact that most of his starters from last season are returning with him. Pitzer has built the program from a club-only team to a recognized high school program to district playoff contender.
Anna will kick off its season on Jan. 3 when it plays host to Paris. On Jan. 7 the Lady Coyotes will take on Bonham. District play starts a month later when Anna takes on Prosper.
Going into the season, we asked Coach Pitzer about his expectations for this upcoming season.
Tribune: Who is returning from last season?
Pitzer: With most of the starters coming back from last year, I see the Lady Coyote Soccer team being competitive in both preseason and district play. Itzia Naranjo, Taylor Morrow, Ruthie Rodriguez, and Kristina Lob will all be pivotal in the outcome of the season and should be difference makers throughout the season.
In addition, both starting outside backs, Lisa Chavez and Francis Naranjo will help anchor the strong defense. Finally, the Lady Coyotes Soccer team has a few new players who will make an impact for us as this season.
Tribune: What have been your pre-season goals?
Pitzer: As for preseason goals, we are have been working on learning a new formation for the upcoming season, so we wiped the slate clean and started fresh with a new approach which should help our attacking players score goals and strengthen our defense.
With instituting the new formation, I want to see my players evolve during the preseason to learn the formation under the stresses of match conditions and I also want the team to begin to jell into what I know they can be, both technically and tactically. Finally, I want this preseason to be fun for the players while they learn to work together and build a team cohesiveness, which will certainly help them this season when we get to district play.
Tribune: What are your expectations for district play?
Pitzer: Beginning district play on February 7th, the Lady Coyotes Soccer team is striving to have a better outcome than last year. Although we qualified for the playoffs last year, we would like to have a higher seed as we progress into post season play this year.
With that in mind, and since we are the only 3A team in a strong 4A district, we could like to enter district play with a positive attitude and a strong will to win.
My final thoughts for the season. I want the girls to have a successful, injury free season, and learn a little more about the beautiful game each time they step on the pitch.
