Melissa volleyball hosted Frisco Lone Star in its season opener on Tuesday night and, consequently, has its first season victory under its belt.

The team was led by senior Madison Rose with 14 kills.

Melissa will start pool play on Thursday and host the Collin County SpikeFest over the Aug. 16th weekend. The Lady Cardinals play three games on Thursday, at 9 a.m. against Callisburg, 11:30 against Paris and at 2:00 against Van Alstyne.

The Lady Cards’ showing in pool play will determine their placement in bracket play on Saturday. The Saturday games will either be held at Melissa High School or Anna High School.

In the first game of the night, Melissa was unable to top its guests and fell 20-25. The Lady Cards bounced back to win three straight and get the win.

The Lady Cardinals took the second game 25-20 to tie the match and then went ahead with a 25-22 game three win. Melissa closed out the match with a 25-20 win in the fourth and final game.

"The team looks promising and strong all the way around," Coach Whitney Nelson said.

In addition to the 14 kills from Rose, Connar Newberry had 10 and Riley Duzenack and Amber Melcher each added seven. Duzenack led the team with 20 assists and Ashley Henger had two aces.

In their 2013 debut, the junior varsity Lady Cardinals fell to Frisco Lone Star in two games, 6-25, 19-25.

The girls had a rocky start but brought it together in the second set only to come up just an inch short of forcing a third.

"This is a team of three returning sophomores and 13 freshmen, so the girls are still working out some of the kinks," Nelson said. "I have high hopes for the remainder of the season, because I know that once everything clicks we’ll be a force to be reckoned with."
