For the first time this season Melissa is unfamiliar territory: on a losing streak. The Lady Cardinals started the season on a hot streak — decimating their opponents in almost every game and falling only once until last Tuesday when injury and illness got the best of the squad in Celina.

With a bye week to recoup, Head Coach Whitney Nelson hoped that her squad would be ready to go on Sept. 24 when it traveled to Gunter. The Lady Tigers were able to sweep Melissa, however, giving the Lady Cardinals an overall record of 18-3 as the team prepares to kick off the district schedule at home on Friday night against Anna.

"The girls have a lot of recovering to do before Friday by focusing on our offensive error percentage," Nelson said.

Gunter took the first game 25-22 and established control in the second game to get the 25-14 win.

Whitney Taylor was back in the lineup for the Lady Cardinals after being out with an injury and she finished the game with three kills and a block. Riley Duzenack led the team with eight points off serves and 17 assists, while Connar Newberry led the team with 12 kills. Madison Rose added 10 kills and Amanda Kocsis had 14 digs.

Melissa stayed close in the final match but was not able to force a fourth game as Gunter took the match 25-23 to complete the sweep.
