Bye-bye summer of 2013. It was nice knowing you and I think you’re leaving too soon … but fall sports cannot wait any longer.

Every year in August, high school coaches get a chance to see who has been working out and keeping in shape over the summer. For the ones who have not, a day of reckoning is coming to town on Monday.

Whether to be dreaded, feared or anxiously anticipated, two-a-days and practices for fall sports will start on Monday with football, volleyball and cross country athletes checking back in for regular practices.

Schools in Anna and Melissa offered summer strength and conditioning programs for the students plus summer leagues for volleyball and 7-on-7 football, so for many athletes, getting back to practicing for a chance to lead their team into the playoffs is something they have been thinking about for many months.

"I am stoked to start another season with some new additions to the team and ready to have one last shot at a two-peat playoffs run," Anna senior volleyball player Amanda Mink said.

The Lady Coyotes made the playoffs last year, taking the third spot in the district, and coach Tomika Crosby is looking for her team to have another strong showing this season.

The Anna football team, led by coach Jason Heath, fell just one win from the playoffs last year — something it is looking to rectify this year.

"I am looking forward to getting started on senior year," Anna lineman Jeremy Gee said. "Ready to get to work with all these guys that I’ve been playing with since middle school. It’s our last one so we have to make it count."

Melissa athletes are looking to repeat as district champs in both football and volleyball, trying to take their first two years in Class 3A by storm. The volleyball squad is bringing back full team of talented players, while the football team will have holes to fill but nothing that coach Seth Stinton doesn’t believe his team is ready for.

Melissa’s football practices will start on Monday morning at 7 a.m. and go until 11 a.m., finishing before the heat of the day. Anna’s football practices will be later in the day, starting at 5 p.m.with players showing up at 4:15 p.m. Saturday practice will be in the morning beginning around 9 a.m.

The second week will be similar with a scrimmage with Ponder on Saturday.

The Anna cross country team will start practices on Monday in the gym at 7 a.m., while the Lady Coyotes volleyball team will practice from 7 to 10 a.m. and then from noon to 2 p.m. Their first scrimmage will be on Friday in Farmersville with two scrimmages on Saturday in Anna.

Melissa’s volleyball team will practice on Monday from 8 to 10 a.m. and then from noon to 3 p.m. with their first scrimmage at Howe on Friday morning.
