As Pottsboro ran back the opening kickoff for a touchdown and scored on its opening drive, it looked like the Cardinals were going to continue their dominance over Anna. However, the Coyotes fought back in the final three quarters to make it a ball game on Sept. 20.

The two teams had six turnovers and combined for almost 180 penalty yards. It ultimately came down to who had the ball at the end, and luckily for Pottsboro (3-1) they were able to run out the clock late for a 21-17 victory.

"I was proud of our effort," Anna Head Coach Jason Heath said. "They could have easily laid down and quit when we were down 14-0 but battled back and had a chance to win at the end."

In the past three seasons, Pottsboro has been a team that Anna (1-3) just couldn’t stop and it seemed like that trend was set to continue. Kory Waller took the opening kickoff right at the Coyote special teamers and burst through, going 97 yards for the score to put the Cardinals up 7-0.

After a Coyote three-and-out, the Cards took to the ground, putting together a 79-yard drive by running at the heart of the Anna defense. Thaddeus Finn capped off the drive with an 8-yard touchdown score, and with less than half a quarter elapsed, Pottsboro was up by two scores.

Anna unveiled a new offensive attack against Pottsboro — the wildcat. Berry Simms, a move in from Prosper, took several direct snaps and either ran or handed the ball off to another back. He finished the game with 55 yards.

Before the end of the first quarter, Anna pinned the Cardinals deep in their own territory and ended up with a safety. In the second quarter, Anna’s offense was able to put together a drive that resulted in an 8-yard touchdown run by Issac Armijo.

The teams traded turnovers and punts in the next four drives. Pottsboro finally responded with another Flinn touchdown.

A few plays later, Armijo was rushing to the right and looked like he was stuffed, but from the bodies he emerged on the left side of the field, took the corner and outran the Cardinal defense 44 yards to the end zone to bring Anna within six points just before the half.

"We’re really fortunate to come away with a win," Pottsboro Head Coach Matt Poe said after the game. "We really didn’t play well after the first quarter. We have a lot of things we need to work on."

Defenses took over in the second half with both teams struggling to move the ball and neither of them finding the end zone.

Anna had a chance late in the game when a bad punt gave it the ball at its own 22 yard line. Later in the drive, Armijo ran for a first down with a 12-yard rush that put Anna on the 11 yard line.

The Coyotes faced fourth-and-two and ran a quarterback sneak that ended up a foot short of the first down, and the ball was turned over on downs. Pottsboro took possession and ran out the clock.

"I thought our defense played good and came up with big play after big play," Heath said. "This team showed they have a lot of fight in them."

Anna will travel to Frisco Lonestar on Friday.
