The Melissa Cardinals’ offense feasted on Howe pitching in a 15-4 win on the final day of the 2014 Gunter Tiger Baseball Tournament on March 1.
After scoring a couple of runs in the first inning the Cards sent 10 batters to the plate in the second, scoring six runs to blow open the contest.
With two on and one out, Tyler West lashed a single to right field to drive in Jace Whittington and Dean Youngblood. Grant Meeks doubled, and after a walk on C.J.Tyler, ZackTorres singled to drive in both runners.
Melissa added two more to send Torres back to the mound with an 8-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the second. After having no difficulties in the first inning, Torres had trouble finding the plate in the second. Howe scored four runs in the inning, all the result of walks or errors.
Tyler came on to pitch late in the frame and walked the first batter he faced before striking out Zach Blevins to end the inning.
Melissa added seven runs in the third to halt any Bulldog comeback plans. With the bases loaded, Tyler stroked a hard shot back up the middle, scoring Youngblood who had led off the inning with a single, and West who had walked.
Whittington took over the pitching duties for Melissa in the final inning and gave up the only Bulldog hit of the game as Easton Ross doubled to open the inning. Whittington worked out of that jam, striking out Caleb Ake as the Cards get the run-rule win.
