The Cardinals took on Denton Ryan Dec. 3 in their first game after the Thanksgiving break. Melissa kept it close in the first half but the Raiders proved too much to handle in the second and handed the Cards the loss.

Melissa is playing short-handed with two key pieces out with football injuries. The team is trying to adjust with continuing to play tough opponents that will help them prepare for district play and the playoffs.

The boys will play in the Sanger tournament over the Dec. 7 weekend and will host Denison on Tuesday night.

Denton Ryan 45, Melissa 34

Sheldon Moore led the Cardinals with 10 points but it was not enough to help lift Melissa in the second half. Denton Ryan was able to finish strong with an 11-point victory on Tuesday night.

Both teams were sluggish early, scoring just 13 points each in the first half. Denton Ryan was able to come out in the second half with a hot hand, however, outscoring Melissa 21-13 in the third quarter. Ryan held on to that lead in the fourth quarter as it went on to get the win.

Connor Bazis finished the game with seven points to help Melissa’s offense.

The Cats held Melissa to just four points in the opening quarter as they built a 13-point advantage.

The Cardinals matched Sherman point-for-point in the second quarter. Staying even didn’t pay off for Melissa, however, as the Cardinals made their way into the locker room stinging from a double-digit deficit at the end of the first half.

Sherman put the game out of reach in the third quarter. The Cats outscoring Melissa by 16 points and, despite their attempts to rally in the fourth quarter, it was just too much to overcome as the Cardinals came away with a loss.
