Three runs in the first inning blazed a trail to a 4-0 win for the Cardinals over Bonham at Zadow Park in Melissa on Friday. Melissa’s Paul Marrufo kick-started the victory for the Cardinals with hard ground ball to left field for an RBI single ran in by Tate Whittington.
Andrew Cole contributed to the Melissa win from the mound as he kept Bonham off the scoreboard by allowing three hits, no walks and earning two strikeouts.
Melissa (12-8) kept the momentum going from its tremendous start in the bottom of the first inning with Cody Jackson running from third to score with the ball in play on a line drive to left field for an RBI single by Bryce Welsh. Brady Morrison earned an RBI single after he hit the ground ball that took Welsh across home, ending the first inning with Melissa up 3-0.
Welsh had a strong night at the plate and highlighted the fifth inning for the Cardinals after hitting a ground ball which took him to second base, making for a total of two hits in two at-bats. Welsh scored the final run of the game for Melissa after Dalton Vestal stepped up to the plate and hit a line drive to right field for a double that Welsh ran across home plate.
The Cardinals’ Tuesday night game at Princeton was washed out and rescheduled for Wednesday night, after the Tribune press time.
