A close game that was up for grabs slipped away for the Lady Coyotes on Tuesday night as they played host to Community. The game was all even going into the sixth inning but two runs from the Lady Braves gave them what they needed to walk away with the victory.
Both teams finish the week at 1-1 in district play. The Lady Coyotes will travel to Bonham on Friday and then take on Princeton the following Tuesday.
Community 3, Anna 1
A pitchers’ duel took place in Anna on Tuesday night as the Lady Braves made their way to town. Community was coming off a difficult 23-8 loss in its district opener against Princeton while Anna was looking to go 2-0 in district play.
After retiring the first three batters, the Lady Coyotes came to the plate looking to gain an early advantage. A single by Haylee Chamness put Anna on track to do so, and after Kaitlin Gibbon got on base the Lady Coyotes had two runners in scoring position. However, Community was able to get two strikeouts to close out the inning as Anna was unable to capitalize.
In the second and third innings it was three-up, three-down for both teams. But in the top of the fourth Community was able to get on the board with an RBI double to take the lead.
Anna responded in the bottom of the frame after a single by Danielle Gonzales put her in position to score the tying run. Kendal Howard hit a line drive down the left field line off the glove of the Community third baseman, bringing Gonzales in to tie the score at 1-all.
In the top of the sixth, the Lady Braves were able to score on a wild pitch and then on an RBI single to go up 3-1.
Gibbon retired the three batters in the seventh, and with one last chance to extend or win the game, Anna had the tying run on base in its portion of the final inning. Chamness tapped a single to get Anna going and then Hailey Wood reached first on a throwing error. As Chamness tried to take home, however, she was called out at the plate and the game came to an end with Community up by two runs.
