Hey, my grandma used to have one of those! The Collin County Farm Museum has brought a wonderful display to the Melissa Library lobby. It is entitled "Rural Sound" and shares the evolution of communication. This is a hands-on exhibit with items and artifacts from the 1800-1900s. Included is a lovely antique pump organ that really plays, two beautiful crank phonographs and several old-time radios. Stop by and read the display boards about this intriguing period in our history. This display will be here until the 15th of July.

Story time in the Melissa Public Library is held on Fridays from 10:15-11 a.m. During the summer months, we are planning for story time to include activities that may interest elementary-age children as well, so feel free to bring your 6-10-year-olds.

o June 7 – A guest reader, Shelly Bartholio and puzzles for the day.

o June 14 – Father’s Day. We have our city "Dad," Mayor Reed Greer, coming to read to us and make our own dads something fun.

o June 21 – Dairy Day. Come out and learn about cows and milk products. There will be a special guest.

o June 28 – Parade Day. Get ready for the Celebration of Freedom and the 4th of July.

Hola! We are continuing our free beginning Spanish class for native English speakers on the second and fourth Wednesdays from 1:30-2:30 p.m. in the City Hall Community Room all summer. Our next classes will be June 12 and 26. Though our regular instructors will not be there, several students and friends will be meeting to practice their language skills. If you are interested in learning and conversing, come walk in and join us in the community room. If you have taken Spanish in your high school classes, come chat and keep up your skills.

Game Day with the Senior Citizens of Melissa. All ages are welcome. Every second and third Thursdays, our seasoned community friends will be meeting in the Community Room of the City Hall from 1–3 p.m. on the second week and noon-2 p.m. on the third for games (June 13 and 20) visiting and fun. Contact librarian@cityofmelissa.com or 402-490-6583 for questions. "Finding Your Family" A new beginning Genealogy class is at the Melissa Public Library on Thursday evenings in the community room. This class will help you organize and analyze what you have, discover the many resources now available to help you and provide the basics for successfully discovering and identifying your ancestors. Instructors Bobbye Fisher and Lela Caywood are looking forward to helping those who are interested to learn of their family heritage. Pre-registration encouraged to ensure handouts, but walk-ins are welcome. Email librarian@cityofmelissa.com. Starting Thursday, June 13, 20 and 27, you will meet from 6:15-7:45 p.m. to put together your pedigree charts and family group sheets.

Save the date: The 2013 Melissa Public Library Summer Reading Program will kick-off on Saturday, June 15 at 11 a.m. at City Hall. We have a guest author coming to share her books, an hour of fun in the foyer and Rise of the Guardians will be shown in the City Council Chamber. Mark your calendar for more information and be ready to come start your summer with a good book and lots of fun.

Wacky Wednesdays: Watch the weekly Wednesday schedule for some wonderful, wild and w-w-w-w- (enough of the W’s!) things for kids 10 years old to 17 years old. If you are wondering what to do this summer, come over to the library between 1-3 p.m. each week starting June 12. We will show some kid’s choice movies (you have to be there to vote for the next week’s showing.) Other weeks, we will do some crafts (does anyone know how to make some bead bracelets and be willing to help us?) It is too hot to swim at that time, so come inside and have fun in the middle of each week. Watch for more to come.
